Walkovers lead to football play-offs

WHILE scoring differences apply this season in the various Clare GAA competitions, there will be, as per rule, some play-offs. In Division 4 football, three teams, Cooraclare, Coolmeen and Miltown, finished on seven points each. Coolmeen received a walkover in their final game, which affects their scoring difference.

Where walkovers are involved, the rule allows for play-offs, so the three teams will play off for the remaining semi-final position. The draw has paired Coolmeen against Cooraclare this Sunday, with the winners going on to play Miltown for a semi-final date against group leaders Corofin. In the other semi-final, Lissycasey will play Kilmurry-Ibrickane. Ennistymon and O’Callaghan’s Mills have been relegated. There is also a play-off in Division 5, as Kilrush and Wolfe Tones each finished on seven points. Kilrush received two walkovers during the campaign and this has resulted in the play-off.

The winners will qualify in fourth position and will play Kilmihil in the semi-final, with Meelick taking on Shannon Gaels in the other semi-final. St Breckan’s and Clooney-Quin have been relegated. There is also a play-off in Division 6 but this is to determine who will be relegated. Three teams, Moy, Clarecastle and Michael Cusack’s, finished on four points each. As Michael Cusack’s had conceded four walkovers in the campaign, they have been relegated, leaving Moy and Clarecastle to play-off for the remaining position.

The semi-final pairings here are Kilmurry-Ibrickane v Crusheen and Éire Óg v Kildysart. In Division 7, the semi-finals will see unbeaten O’Curry’s take on Clondegad and Parteen play Kilkee. In Division 3, O’Curry’s are also unbeaten and they will play Ballyvaughan in the semi-final, with Kilfenora and Kildysart meeting in the other semi-final. Doonbeg and Naomh Eoin have been relegated.

Naomh Eoin and Michael Cusack’s finished level on four points each but, as per the new rule, Michael Cusack’s finish ahead of Naomh Eoin, as they won when the sides met. The semi-final line-up for the Garry Cup (Division 2) was finalised on Tuesday evening. St Joseph’s defeated Ennistymon and this was good news for Lissycasey, as it puts them into the semi-finals.

The four semi-finalists are St Joseph’s, Kilrush, Lissycasey and Wolfe Tones and the pairings will be finalised when the result of the Wolfe Tones v Cratloe game is known. A win for Wolfe Tones will see them in third place and up against Kilrush in the semi-final, whereas the Shannon side will finish fourth and will play St Joseph’s, should they lose to Cratloe. There are three teams being relegated from the division and they are Kilmihil, Cratloe and St Breckan’s.
